Empowering youth in the community: A tech hub success story at Essentia Health-Deer River

Through the community health needs assessment (CHNA) process, Essentia Health is constantly striving to make an impact on the communities we are privileged to serve by understanding and addressing the most pressing needs.

In Deer River, Minnesota, one of the needs identified was limited internet access. We found it was a significant barrier for youth education and social connection. Recognizing this, Essentia in 2022 partnered with Smart North, a Minnesota-based nonprofit, to create the Deer River Community Tech Hub. Located within the Goodall Resource Center at Essentia Health-Deer River, the tech hub is a safe, inclusive and joyous space for individuals ages 12 and older to explore technology, foster creativity, connect with industry leaders and train in 21st-century tech career pathways.

The Tech Hub is staffed by a locally recruited team that understands the needs and cultural context of visitors and provides support, inspiration and guidance. The space also provides basic needs such as warm meals, clothing, transportation and social, emotional and cultural support.

Tech Hub programming also includes discovery camps for learning foundational technology skills in leading areas like 3D printing, drones and graphic design from industry professionals, along with mentorship that serves as a catalyst for new opportunities. More recently, the new “Next Gen” Certification Program equips people 16 and older with industry-recognized certifications for entry-level jobs that do not require a college degree, with potential internships with local businesses at the end of this 20-week program.

“At Essentia, we know that investing in our community’s youth has the potential for long-term impact,” said Amanda Reed, Essentia Health-Deer River administrator. “By equipping youth with the knowledge, skills and resources to lead healthy lives, communities have the potential to thrive for generations to come.”

Because of the success at Essentia Health-Deer River, Smart North recently expanded and brought a Tech Hub to Grand Rapids as well. Between July and December of 2024, these tech hubs have been accessed almost 1,000 times, serving about 150 youngsters.

Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting that access to the tech hubs makes them feel safe and gives them experiences they wouldn’t have otherwise. In Deer River, data shows that several youth who have been regulars at the Tech Hub have remarkably improved their attendance, grades and behavior at school.

Since 2022, Essentia has invested nearly $85,000 in these tech hubs and is committed to continuing to support these investments in our young people. Future plans include a program that empowers youth to teach their families basic tech skills. We also hope to expand the recently launched “The Future is Feminine” initiative to bring more women into higher paying and high-demand tech jobs with training, childcare and transportation, and help create a local tech talent pipeline for our businesses, along with the Next Gen program.

Essentia’s investment in the Deer River and Grand Rapids tech hubs demonstrates a dedication to empowering youth and fostering community growth for generations to come.

“We are so grateful for the ongoing partnership with Essentia, and we remain committed to working together with them, along with Deer River and Grand Rapids Circle of Care partners, to help our youth get ready to thrive in the 21st century tech economy,” says Sabina Saksena, co-founder and executive director of Smart North.
