Essentia Health-Fosston announces significant investment to upgrade emergency department, enhance patient care

Recognizing an opportunity to enhance emergency care and support the Fosston and neighboring communities, Essentia Health-Fosston is moving toward finalizing a $12 million investment to dramatically expand the emergency department.

The new ED is expected to be 6,700 square feet — compared to the current 1,100-square-foot space — and will greatly improve patient flow and confidentiality; employee and patient safety; infection control; EMS access; and overall efficiency. Planning for the addition includes a new ambulance bay and rooms designed specifically for patients needing behavioral health care.

"The project would mark another substantial commitment to our patients and the broader Fosston community," said Tanner Goodrich, senior vice president of operations for Essentia Health. "Our team is dedicated to delivering exceptional care and serving the community. This investment will help us continue advancing those goals."

The investment, subject to approval from the Essentia Health Board of Directors, is another example of Essentia's long-term commitment to delivering excellent health care and meeting patient needs in the Fosston area. On the current timeline, the project could be complete in early spring 2027.

Essentia Health had previously allotted funding for this project, which then was approved via a 2-1 vote by the First Care Medical Services (FCMS) Board on March 18. The sole vote against this critical community investment came from the Board member appointed by the City of Fosston. Fortunately, it was able to advance with a simple majority vote.

The ED addition also includes funding for a new registration desk and other important equipment. Design work is expected to start this spring. Essentia will continue to share updates with community partners and patients as the project gets underway.
