What is an intensive outpatient program?

Intensive Outpatient – Adult
Essentia Health offers a short-term, outpatient mental health care program that provides team-based care. While living at home, you'll attend group therapy in a safe and supportive environment. We call this our Partial Hospitalization Program and it is offered in Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin.

Length: 3 weeks
Schedule: 4 days a week, 6 hours a day

Our team of mental health professionals gets to know you—not just your condition. Depending on your needs, you may work with:
- Nurse practitioners (NPs) and registered nurses (RNs) – Provide care, treatment, medication management, and education
- Psychotherapists – Offer individual and group therapy
- Psychiatrists – Provide care, treatment, and medication management
- Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADCs) – Access substance abuse issues
- Occupational therapists – Help you gain skills related to daily activities so you can be more independent
- Recreational therapists – Coordinate programs like art therapy, music therapy, and recreation therapy
- Social workers – Connect you with community resources and help you plan for care after you leave the program
- Chaplains – Give spiritual guidance and support
Follow-Up Care
You’ll leave the program with a plan to get the support and mental health care you need to live well. We'll help you maintain your progress by connecting you with other health care professionals and community support groups.

Intensive Outpatient - Young Adult
For young adults ages 18-25, we offer an intensive outpatient therapy program designed specifically for your age group. During this program, you’ll gain skills to better manage your mental health while continuing to work or attend school.
Length: 4-6 weeks
Schedule: 3 days a week, 3 hours a day
Where: Essentia Health-Building E (Duluth)What You’ll Gain
We’ll develop a treatment plan that focuses on your needs and goals. You’ll meet with a therapist and other young adults facing similar challenges in a safe, nurturing environment. You’ll learn skills to help you:
- Focus your attention on the present (mindfulness)
- Balance priorities and demands
- Build healthy relationships
- Cope with difficult situations
- Manage your emotions
- Identify and change irrational or unhelpful ways of thinking
- Set goals
Follow-Up Care
You’ll leave the program with a plan to get the support and mental health care you need to live well. We’ll help you throughout your transition and provide referrals to other health care professionals as needed.

Intensive Outpatient Care - Child and Adolescent
Your child’s health care team may recommend they receive mental health or substance abuse services at the Amberwing - Center for Youth & Family Well-Being.
Amberwing provides an outpatient program that helps youth and adolescents, grades 1-12, who are facing serious emotional or mental health problems. We’ll group your child with other children of similar clinical and developmental needs.
Length: 3 weeks
Schedule: 5 days a week, 7 hours a day
