What’s a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist?
Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) doctors are obstetricians with advanced training in caring for women and babies during a non-routine pregnancy. You may also hear them called perinatologists or high-risk obstetricians.
Should I See a High-Risk OB?
Get specialized care from an MFM doctor when you or your baby have an increased risk for complications during pregnancy or after birth. You might have a high-risk pregnancy if you:
- Are a teenager or over 35 years old
- Are pregnant with twins, triplets or more
- Have an chronic health condition, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, a blood disorder, or HIV/AIDS
- Had complications with previous pregnancies
- Develop preeclampsia
An MFM doctor also may join your care team if your unborn baby has been diagnosed with a congenital abnormality (birth defect), growth problem, infection, or other condition.

Your MFM doctor cares for both you and your baby (or babies) before, during, and after pregnancy. That means you can depend on your specialist to:
- Help you have a healthy pregnancy
- Check your baby’s growth and development
- Coordinate prenatal care of congenital conditions
- Care for newborns after a high-risk delivery
- Coordinate care with pediatric specialists when needed
